Food Freedom Therapy
Are you tired of struggling with your relationship with food and your body and of the impact it’s having on your life?
Are you consumed by dieting or exercising, binging or restricting or always trying to control food?
Imagine being able to engage fully with life rather than worrying about food and your body.
Whether you have received an official eating disorder diagnosis or not, support is here, and full recovery is possible.
I offer individual therapy in Belfast and Online for adults who struggle with their relationship with food and their body.
My Approach
I work primarily from a Psychodynamic perspective. This means that the scope of our Therapy sessions will extend far beyond food…and in some sessions we may not talk about food at all. This is because
Eating issues are about emotions and feelings.
A psychodynamic approach to therapy focuses on the emotional roots of eating struggles — many of which are unconscious and formed in early relationships. This means that together we will gain an understanding of the root causes of where your disordered eating came from and how it is linked to your past experiences. We will think about your changing emotions and feelings towards yourself and others, we will discuss childhood memories and relationships, and think about the significance of the past and its repetition in the present.
In making sense of your emotional world we can gain insight into why you feel and behave the way you do. From there you will be able to learn healthier ways of coping with emotions and of relating to yourself and others. This will allow you to manage your life differently to move towards the type of life that you want.
Psychodynamic therapy isn’t a quick fix, but it offers meaningful, lasting healing.
Within our sessions I might also incorporate elements of enhanced CBT for Eating Disorders and Intuitive Eating. These methodologies can offer some additional practical tools which I find are very helpful to support you in everyday recovery.
Additionally I work from an anti-diet perspective, this means acknowledging the context and damaging effect of the diet-obsessed world we live in. I also advocate for a HAES (Health at Every Size) and Intuitive Eating approach to food.
