Many of us are on some sort of diet or if not an ‘official’ diet, we’re adhering to some sort of restrictive eating like avoiding certain foods or not eating enough to feel really satisfied. Even if you are eating ‘enough’ you may still be restricting foods you really enjoy, even this type of ‘mental restriction’ can cause a real sense of deprivation. Restriction of any kind can lead to a restrict-binge cycle, overthinking food choices, feeling stressed around food and feeling anxious in social situations where food is involved. 

What is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive eating is an evidence-based approach developed by dietitians to help people (re!)learn how to eat according to our body’s natural appetite and physiological cues. Intuitive eating has been shown to help improve attunement to internal hunger cues, dietary variety, our relationship with exercise and our body appreciation and satisfaction. Additionally, engaging with intuitive eating has been shown to improve psychological flexibility (such as black and white thinking around good and bad foods) and our self regard and optimism. Plus it has been shown to improve several physiological markers of health, such as cholesterol and glucose control and blood pressure. 

Intuitive eating is a set of tools to help people move away from rigid external rules, away from the restrict-binge cycle and instead to tune into their own internal hunger and satiety cues. It’s not a weight-loss diet, in fact it’s a way to say goodbye to diets for good.
